Health and Safety Policy Arrangements in 2021/22

H & S: Training

We recognise the importance of ensuring our operatives, both employed and sub-contractors, receive appropriate training to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to carry out their work safely.

We review the training needs of the company’s operatives in January and plan to commission the appropriate training required to maintain standards over the course of the ensuring year.

We employ people with many years of experience of working in the trade under strict health and safety policies. Most of our training needs consist of organising updates and refresher courses to remind our workers of recommended safe working practices on the following key health and safety subjects:

  • Covid-19 Safety
  • Asbestos in the workplace
  • Silica and workplace dust
  • Contaminated waste removal
  • Safe use of ladders/hop-ups
  • Safe use of platforms
  • Groundworks
  • COSHH
  • Electrical powered and impact tools
  • Noise and vibration
  • Manual handling
  • Slips, trips, and falls
  • Storage and transport of materials
  • Site fire and other emergency risks
  • Personal and site welfare
  • Impact on environment considerations

On 19th July 2021, the Government removed the mandatory legal obligation of many of the Covid-19 restrictions in England. It is self-evident from the rise in reported daily infections and deaths that the problem has not gone away. The only thing that has changed is the number of double-vaccinated people in England appears to be meeting the expectation future infections will be less severe. It is hoped the numbers of infected people who go on to develop more severe illnesses will not put the NHS under too much stress.

Many employers have recognised that they have now assumed the legal responsibility of protecting their employees from contracting Covid-19 in the workplace. They cannot afford to relax observing Covid-19 safe-working measures without appearing to be neglecting their basic legal obligation to keep people safe in their workplace. The obligation is set against a background where employees in their private lives joined the masses who abandoned observing any kind of Covid-19 guideline compliance weeks ago.

Marisco will continue to mandate staff must wear face coverings whenever asked to do so by anyone they come into contact with in the workplace. We will continue to train staff on Covid-19 safe-working procedures and working in bubbles to counter the effect of enforced self-isolation rendering the company unable to operate through a lack of staff able to work. We are hedging our risk exposure in anticipation of the need to reintroduce tighter Covid-restrictions in the Autumn, if not before.
